The story
History
The Ouzoud waterfalls — *ouzoud* means "olive" in Tamazight, for the trees that frame the gorge — have drawn travelers since long before the Marrakech day-tour industry built bus routes to them. The Berber village of Tanaghmeilt at the top of the falls grows the oranges, almonds and olives that supply the cafés terraced down the cliff. The Tribute lake at the bottom feeds an ancient water-mill complex that still grinds flour. The site has been a Site of Biological and Ecological Interest since 2003, protecting the Barbary macaques that range freely along the descent.
Getting there
Getting there
The falls sit in the Middle Atlas, 150 km north-east of Marrakech and 22 km from the regional town of Azilal. By car the drive is 3 hours from Marrakech; allow more in the heat of July–August. Public buses run Marrakech → Azilal (4 hours, 80 MAD) then a 30-minute grand-taxi (15 MAD per seat) onward. The vast majority of visitors come on a guided day trip — easier and includes lunch.

Best time to visit
Best time to visit
March to June for the snowmelt-fed flow at its most dramatic, with rainbows visible most mornings between 10:00 and 12:00. Autumn (September–November) is also excellent. Summer months are hot but the spray cools you. Winters are quieter and beautifully green but the trail is wet. Plan to arrive by 09:30 to beat the bus tours; if you stay overnight you'll have the falls almost to yourself at sunrise.

Tickets & hours
Tickets & hours
Free entry. Parking at the village 20 MAD. A small raft ride at the base of the main fall is 20 MAD per person and worth doing for the close-up view. A local guide for descent context is 100–150 MAD; ask at the cafés rather than accepting the first hawker. Cafés serve hot meals from 11:00 to about 18:00.
